There are a number of techniques that you should focus on when building a website in order to ensure that it is SEO friendly. Search engine optimization is extremely important to the overall success of your website, and if done properly, it can go a long way to saving you a great deal of money on advertising.

  • When you design your site, make sure that you do it with SEO needs in mind. Search engines cannot read the code that makes up all those pretty flash movies and it will essentially mean nothing to them since they thrive on text in order to be able to determine what your website is about. All the bells and whistles don’t mean squat if your website is unable to be properly indexed by the search engines.
  • All of your pages should include meta tags such as a title tag, keyword and description tags. The text within your website should contain the keywords salted throughout that you have in your keywords tag. In most cases, people will not be looking for your site by name. They will be looking for you using keywords and so the site must make effective use of keywords.
  • When you design your website you need to avoid using a lot of drop down menus. Avoid using a lot of images too. Not only do they make your website slow to load (a lot of people still use dialup believe it or not!), but search engines also have no idea of the content of the pictures.
  • If possible, your domain name should make use of the chosen keywords. This is not a requirement however placement has been shown to be much better when your domain incorporates your keywords.
  • All pages on your website should link back to your home page and your sitemap. At one time, very few websites even made use of a sitemap however it has been proven time and again that this is beneficial to good search engine positioning.
  • If you can possibly afford to do so, your websites should be on your own server. This is not a requirement but some seem to think that if your site is on a shared server with another site that gets banned, it may result in yours being banned as well.
  • You should be adding new and fresh content to your website at least on a weekly basis. If possible however, a new page every day can go a long way to getting your website established more quickly.
